"This page contains plans and designs to enable you to make a simple but effective outdoor oven suitable for baking bread and pastries and roasting joints of meat.

An ammo box on a barbecue - from the front!!

1. Build a conventional garden barbecue
2. Place an old large ammo box on top
3. Control the heat by opening and closing the door
4. Placing a grill tray on the oven floor will prevent burning

An ammo box on a barbecue - from the side!!

This design is so simple there's no way it can't work. Ammunition boxes were easy to come by in the army, that's why I used one such a lot in my unit. If you cannot get hold of one, any large strong metal box will do.

If the box has been painted, burn it out first before baking bread in it. (use it empty till all the stink of burning paint has gone).

Extremely useful as a stovetop oven (with a woodburning stove for instance, or on top of an oil drum converted into a stove), it works just as easily over a trench fire and is therefore ideal as a camp oven.
