Soap Equipment

This page lists the equipment needed to successfully make soap.

You will need some starting tools to make soap. Many of these you will already have lying around your home. Some are essential and others are just desirable.

The Essential Items.

Apron
Rubber gloves
Goggles or sun glasses
Non-reactive mixing bowls
Large plastic spoon
Dieter's scales
Container to use as mould
Stove/cooker/fire/BBQ/heat source

The Desirable Items

Stick blender
Plastic novelty moulds
Thermometer
Insulating materials

Any mixing bowls or mould you use must be non-reactive. So they must be plastic, pottery or glass. Enamelware is OK but ensure there are no chips or cracks in the enamel. Some moulds you may find lying around like tupperware containers. Others can be used waxed milk cartons. When the soap has set, just rip off the carton and cut the soap into slices. Metal moulds are not suitable as they may have an adverse reaction with the lye. A dieter's scale is essential and should be capable of measuring as fine as a tenth of an ounce.
You need to be sure of exact measurements when making soap to make sure it's safe to use.
Soap making is a chemical reaction, and the wrong amount of reactants can be disastrous.
